One Big Happy Family, Texas - Style

There is a reason that there has been a lack of activity on this blog over the last month. We were invaded (in the very best sense of that term, of course). For 2 1/2 weeks we had the privilege of hosting family on the little corner of Texas that we call home. They came in waves: Sarah & Sophia first; Mom & Mandy a week later; and Dad & Mitch a day later.

We shopped; we rodeoed; we visited with friends; we explored the school campus & the popular sights of the city; we got stuck in traffic (too many times :/); we missed the train; and we ate a little bit of chicken-fried steak, some cajun, a whole lot of BBQ, some fresh salsa, and Tex-Mex too. (Notice the attention given to food in that list. Everything's bigger in Texas, including us, as Sophia put it (referring to all the eating we were doing).) We taught them how to say yee-haw and y'all and by the end I think we were plain ol' successful at tuckerin' them all out.

Reunion with the Thomas clan.
Birthday Boys!
Look!
One of the many turtles that entertained us for a good while.
Sophia took the entertainment to another level.
Texas Wildlife
Trying on a little bit of "cowgirl" @ Justin Boots.
Fried Pickles @ Razoo's Cafe...fried everything down here!
Stockyards Rodeo
Main-street, Grapevine
"What will you trade me for this nickel I made into a cowboy hat?"
Happy family...even though we missed the "real" train...

Canadian Thanksgiving in Pictures

Short one wallet; short one jacket; and obviously, short a few marbles ;) we have just returned from a wonderful week home in Canada with Mike's family. The whole 10 days were wonderful but by far my favourite part was the final few - thanksgiving weekend - spent with my in-laws but also with my sister and cousin who are currently studying at Word of Life Bible Institute in Owen Sound, ON. They say that a picture is worth a thousand words so I think I've included about 21000 words worth below...because they are much better at capturing our time together than my babbling. :)

Thursday, October 6 - We met up with Sarah, Sophia, and Ryan who, along with Word of Life had spent the previous week doing Open Air Evangelism in Toronto and Hamilton. It was neat to watch them patiently and consistently share the Gospel with whoever the Lord brought past them on the street; it was neat to spend the day sharing alongside them.
-------------------------------------------------------------

Friday, October 7 - We had an occasion to dress up. Sophia's graduation happened to be scheduled during that same weekend that we were there and so we got to share in the event with her. In honour of the occasion we went out for Lebanese food. Watching Ryan eat it was a highlight of the weekend! :) Another highlight is that between the times I last saw them, Sophia (sister-in-law) and Sarah (sister) have become very close friends - it was so fun talking, laughing, and hanging out with them together!
-------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday, October 8 - While in Kitchener we HAD to introduce Sarah and Ryan to City Cafe, one of Mike's (and I think Sophia's too) favourite coffee shops/cafes. (I will second that they have about the best plain-old cup of coffee I've ever had and probably about the best homemade bagels too.) Following our breakfast stop we spent the morning at one of my most favourite places to visit every time we're in the area, the St. Jacob's Farmers Market.
-------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday & Sunday, October 8-9 - We spent the weekend at their cottage on Lake Huron in Kincardine. It was a weekend full of too much food, long walks on the beach, watching sunsets, sitting by camp fires, and enjoying family.

Letter L-ing it from Canada to Texas!

Letter L-ing it across the continent (in honour of the Lorusso name, of course ;))

1 province and 7 states, 4 430 km, 46 driving hours, over the span of 8 days...brought us back to our home in Fort Worth, Texas. What sweetened the deal is that we got to share it with friends. John and Jackie Rice mentioned several months earlier that they'd possibly be interested in driving down to Texas with us and we took them seriously...and made an adventure out of it.

On our honeymoon we somehow got stuck in a time-share presentation (after being warned many times prior by my dad to watch out for them :))...we were shocked and annoyed that they especially tried to influence us towards buying with the idea that we NEEDed a vacation place to regularly take our family in the years to come. Since when did our blessings and privileges become needs? I think of this often now anytime that we travel and it has caused me to be even more thankful for opportunities to go places, see things, to enjoy life and the world which God created!

Butte, MT (looked at the copper mine mansions, walked up to the headframes (required trespassing, but after we had been given 'permission' by one of the locals))
Salt Lake City, UT (explored the state building, toured the Beehive house (Brigham Young's historic home), got asked to leave the Beehive house because we wouldn't convert, walked around the Temple square, took pictures of Tim Horton's coffee cups with the statues of the Mormon founders/leaders)
Zion National Park, UT (rode the shuttle through the canyon, drove through a mile-long tunnel, hiked, hung out with the squirrels, nearly died of heat exhaustion)
Las Vegas, NV (walked the strip, explored the hotels and casinos, went outlet mall shopping, relaxed at our cheap and beautiful resort!)
Bellagio, Las Vegas, NV (probably our favourite part of the Vegas chapter - toured the resort, ate at the buffet (thanks Dad&Mom :)), watched the fountain show 2x, watched John and Jackie fight off cockroaches during the fountain show)

Hoover Dam, UT (drove across the dam, toured the power plant and visitor center museum)

Grand Canyon National Park, AZ (rode the shuttle/hiked the rim of the canyon)

"His will is our hiding place" (con't)

Corrie Ten Boom's story also captivated me for another reason. Two years ago I was given the opportunity to visit Ravensbrück, the final concentration camp in Germany where her and her sister, Betsy, were imprisoned. I was looking back through some of my pictures as I was reading and I found it interesting to be able to envision in my mind her setting even more than just through her written descriptions. I remember during the tour finding it hard to fathom the reality that had taken place on that location only 50 years ago. The sun was shining far too brightly that day to fit the mood which hangs over the camp....

I included below some of the pictures from that tour (please excuse the photography - I'm more of a tourist than an artist when it comes to picture taking :)).

SS Headquarters at Ravensbruck
Father sat down on the edge of the narrow bed.
"Corrie," he began gently, "when you and I go to Amsterdam - when do I give you your ticket?"
I sniffed a few times, considering this.
"Why, just before we get on the train."
"Exactly, And our wise Father in heaven knows when we're going to need things, too. Don't run out ahead of Him, Corrie. When the time comes that some of us will have to die, you will look in your heart and find the strength you need - just in time."

SS living quarters, on the outskirts of the camp
Tante Jans put her hand over her eyes and began to cry. "Empty, empty!" she choked at last through her tears. "How can we bring anything to God? What does He care for our little tricks and trinkets?"
...she lowered her hands and with tears still coursing down her face whispered, "Dear Jesus, I thank You that You have done all - all - on the Cross, and that all we need in life or death is to be sure of this."

Looking into the main entrance of Ravensbruck
"Oh, my dears, I am sorry for all Dutchmen now who do not know the power of God. For we will be beaten. But He will not."

The sleeping barracks were torn down but each tree marks where one once stood.

Betsie put a finger on my mouth. "Don't say it, Corrie! There are no 'if's' in God's world. And no places that are safer than other places. The center of His will is our only safety - O Corrie, let us pray that we may always know it!"

Some of the remaining working/factory barracks
"Those poor people," Father echoed. But to my surprise I saw that he was looking at the soldiers.... "I pity the poor Germans, Corrie. They have touched the apple of God's eye."

A memorial to the prisoners.
Love. How did one show it? How could God Himself show truth and love at the same time in a world like this?
By dying. The answer stood out for me sharper and chiller than it ever had before that night: the shape of a Cross etched on the history of the world.

The "bunker" where prisoners underwent interrogation, solitary confinement, and discipline.
"Would you be willing to take a Jewish mother and her baby into your home?"
For a moment I saw compassion and frear struggle in his face. Then he straightened. "No. Definitely not. We could lose our lives for that Jewish child!"
Unseen by either of us, Father had appeared in the doorway. "Give the child to me, Corrie," he said...
"You say we could lose our lives for this child. I would consider that the greatest honor that could come to my family."

Located in the "bunker".
"That old man!" he cried. "Did he have to be arrested? You, old man!"
Willem led Father up to the desk. The Gestapo chief leaned forward. "I'd like to send you home, old fellow," he said. "I'll take your word that you won't cause any more trouble."
"If I go home today," he said evenly and clearly, "tomorrow I will open my door again to any man in need who knocks."

The crematorium (Ravensbruck had their own gas chambers for the final year of operation)
"The truth, Sir," I said swallowing, "is that God's viewpoint is sometimes different from ours - so different that we could not even guess at it unless He had given us a Book which tells us such things."

A picture of a picture in the museum at Ravensbruck.
"Thank You," Betsie went on serenely, "for the fleas and for --"
The fleas! This was too much. "Betsie, there's no way even God can make me grateful for a flea."
" 'Give thanks in all circumstances,'" she quoted. "It doesn't say, 'in pleasant circumstances." Fleas are part of this place where God has put us." (pg. 199)...
"You know we've never understood why we ahd so much freedom in the big room," she said, "Well ---I've found out."..."She wouldn't step through the door and neither would the guards. And you know why?"
"Betsie could not keep the triumph from her voice: "because of the fleas! That's what she said, 'That place is crawling with fleas!'"
My mind rushed back to our first hour in this place. I remembered Betsie's bowed head, remembereed her thanks to God for creatures I could see no use for.

Did you know that...

...that dates grow on palm trees?

(...and that date milkshakes don't taste as bad as they sound?)

...that palm trees in their natural environment look a little less trim than those lining the streets of LA?

...that California is going to fall into the ocean?

...that grapefruit you picked yourself tastes so much better?

 ...that my brother is
extremely handsome?

At the beginning of March I had the wonderful opportunity of meeting up with my Dad, Mom, Brother and Grandparents in California. I left the poor husband at home pouring over books and papers and sadly, Mandy and Sarah were also unable to come. We spent the first couple of days in Anaheim with Mickey Mouse and then drove to Palm Springs where my Grandparents have been hiding from winter since February. Too much fun was had riding the Tower of Terror and California Screamin', showing G&G all our favourite spots in the Disney parks, shopping, eating, touring the desert, drinking date milkshakes and Sonic cream slushes, picking grapefruits right off the tree; but what I enjoyed the most was just being with them all. I flew out of Palm Springs 5 days later, putting my back out while trying to stow my carry-on which I had stashed full of fresh me-picked grapefruits, back to my home and my husband (who, yes, I did miss very much)!

It was such a blessing to be able to spend some time with my family. I'm such a spoiled girl!

...my family is the best!
